Stand Up & Learn™ is the Nantucket Comedy Festival's 501(c)(3) nonprofit comedy education program. It empowers youth ages 8-18 to build self-confidence through learning to write and perform original stand-up comedy. This art form provides a wealth of skills that can be applied to the real world, including storytelling, creative writing, interpersonal communication and public speaking.
Despite these difficult and trying times, here at NCF, we are doing everything we can to help. We are not essential workers, but surely, stopping to enjoy a laugh and a break from our worries is the best thing that we can do for our mental health right now. For the kids of Stand Up & Learn, even though we are not able to meet in person, we are starting up virtual workshops, to give children a place of calm and serenity, and maybe do a little to help them process the fear and uncertainty they are seeing around them. We think this is exactly the sort of innovative program our kids need right now.
For adults, and people sheltering-in-place, we aired "The Best Medicine" a weekly virtual comedy roundtable, featuring our own Kevin Flynn and hosted by former ESPN sportscaster Bob Ley. Each week, with the aid of Nantucket Community Television, we live streamed a comic meeting of the minds, to bring a little lightness and levity to our situation. Episodes can be seen on our Vimeo page at www.vimeo.com/nantucketcomedyfestival
